A Molecular Nutrition & Food Research study found concentrated orange-peel carotenoids improved glucose and inflammation in mice — promising, but a long way from a human food claim.

The Mouse Study

A study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research analyzed orange-peel extract and identified carotenoids including beta-cryptoxanthin, violaxanthin, and lutein. In rats fed a high-fat, high-sugar diet, eight weeks of high-dose extract normalized fasting glucose and reduced insulin resistance, lipid accumulation, and inflammation — with the inflammatory marker IL-6 falling by more than half in the treated animals. The molecular-docking work suggested the carotenoids bind metabolic targets with affinity comparable to some medications.

Why This Is Not a Food Claim

This is animal work, and the dose came from a concentrated extract, not from eating orange peel. The authors are explicit that ordinary orange peel has far lower active-compound concentrations and poor bioavailability, so drinking orange-peel tea is not a metabolic treatment. The study matters as a signal about the phytochemical direction of research, not as a reason to change what you eat.
