Low-fat products replace fat with sugar and refined carbs. The result: higher glycemic load, less satiety, and worse blood sugar control.
The Low-Fat Trap
When fat is removed from a product, something must replace it for texture and flavor -- and that something is usually sugar or refined starch. Low-fat yogurt has more sugar than full-fat. Low-fat salad dressing replaces olive oil with sugar and thickeners. Low-fat peanut butter has added sugar and hydrogenated oils to replace the natural peanut oil. The metabolic result: a higher glycemic load and less satiety. You eat more and spike harder.
What Works Instead
Focus on fat quality, not fat quantity. Replace saturated fats (butter, fatty meats, palm oil) with unsaturated fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, fatty fish). Keep total fat moderate (25-35% of calories) rather than trying to minimize it. For dairy: full-fat plain yogurt or milk has a slightly higher calorie count but a lower glycemic load than the low-fat, sugar-added version. For cooking: olive oil is the evidence-backed choice.
