Does Drinking Water Actually Affect Blood Sugar?

Dehydration concentrates blood glucose and can impair insulin function. Here's the evidence on water intake and glycemic control.
The Hydration-Glucose Link
When you are dehydrated, your blood volume decreases. The same amount of glucose in less blood volume means a higher measured concentration — your glucose meter reads higher even though the total glucose in your body hasn't changed.
Beyond this dilution effect, dehydration triggers the release of vasopressin, a hormone that can stimulate the liver to release stored glucose. Chronic low-level dehydration has been associated with higher HbA1c levels in observational studies.
Practical guidance: aim for 6-8 glasses of water per day. More if you are active or in hot weather. Unsweetened tea and black coffee count toward fluid intake (contrary to popular belief, the diuretic effect of caffeine is mild and does not cause net fluid loss at typical consumption levels).
