Airport food courts, hotel breakfast buffets, and unfamiliar cuisines -- how to eat well with diabetes anywhere in the world.
Airport Survival
Pack a meal for the flight -- security allows solid food. Turkey and cheese roll-ups, nuts, cut vegetables, hard-boiled eggs. Airport food courts: look for salad bars (dressing on side), grilled chicken sandwiches (skip the bun for half), or sushi (sashimi over rolls). Avoid: Cinnabon, pretzel stands, pizza by the slice.
Hotel Breakfast Strategy
Hotel buffets follow a pattern: pastries and cereals on one side, eggs and fruit on the other. Walk past the pastry table. Load up on scrambled eggs, bacon (occasional), fresh fruit, and plain yogurt. If there is an omelet station, use it -- customized vegetables and protein, no hidden sugar.
International Travel
Research local cuisine before you go. Most traditional diets are actually diabetes-friendly before Westernization. Mediterranean (olive oil, vegetables, fish, legumes), Japanese (fish, rice in small portions, vegetables, miso), Indian (dal, vegetables, spices -- watch the rice and naan portions), Latin American (beans, grilled meats, fresh salsas, corn tortillas over flour).
