You do not need a food scale at every meal. Use your hands: palm = protein, fist = vegetables, cupped hand = carbs, thumb = fats.

Hand Method

Palm of your hand (thickness included): 3-4 oz of protein -- chicken, fish, meat, tofu. One fist: 1 cup of non-starchy vegetables -- broccoli, spinach, peppers. Cupped hand: 1/2 cup of carbohydrates -- rice, pasta, quinoa, fruit. Thumb (from knuckle to tip): 1 tablespoon of fats -- olive oil, butter, nut butter. This method scales to your body size (larger hands = larger portions) and works anywhere.

Portion Distortion Awareness

Restaurant portions are 2-4x standard serving sizes. A restaurant pasta dish is often 3-4 cups -- 6-8 cupped-hand portions. A restaurant steak can be 12-16 oz -- 3-4 palm portions. When eating out, mentally divide your plate using the hand method before you start eating. Box half immediately if the portion is oversized.
