20-Year Study

A study published in Current Developments in Nutrition (2026) used 20 years of tracking data to examine the relationship between daily legume intake and cardiometabolic disease. After adjusting for age, sex, education, income, smoking, exercise, BMI, and other dietary factors including red meat, refined grains, and added sugar, each additional ounce (about 28 grams dry, or roughly half a cup cooked) of legumes per day was associated with a 19% lower overall prevalence of cardiometabolic disease. Removing BMI from the model strengthened the association to 21%, and for type 2 diabetes specifically the reduction was about 20%.

Why Legumes Work
