The Three Exercise Types That Move Blood Sugar the Most

A comparison of 15 exercise styles in type 2 diabetes ranked high-intensity intervals, jogging, and combined resistance training as the strongest for glucose control.

The 15-Exercise Comparison

A study comparing 15 exercise styles for people with type 2 diabetes — jogging, walking, aerobics, treadmill, brisk walking, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), tai chi, yoga, and others — ranked them on glucose control, lipid and blood-pressure effects, and practicality. Three rose to the top: high-intensity interval training, jogging, and combined resistance training. The ranking matters because the same study also notes the caveat that not every exercise suits every person.

The Top Three, in Order

HIIT ranked first: short, near-maximal bursts — sprints, high-knees, push-ups, squats — for about 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off, repeated for a few minutes. It raises heart rate sharply, increases metabolic rate, and boosts skeletal-muscle blood flow, which is where most post-meal glucose is cleared. Jogging came next: about 30 minutes of jogging meaningfully improves HbA1c and fasting glucose. Combined resistance training — bodyweight moves plus machine resistance — placed third by building muscle, which is the body's largest glucose sink and improves insulin sensitivity over the long term.

GlycemicWise data perspective

A quick check of our database: Egg comes in at GL 0 per 100g (Low GL). Across the 291 Dairy and Egg Products foods GlycemicWise covers, 88% fall in the low-GL range.

The Safety Caveat

HIIT is not for everyone. People with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, severe retinopathy, foot ulcers, or peripheral neuropathy should avoid high-intensity work, and anyone new to it should build up gradually and get clearance first. The practical throughline is that the muscle is the key organ — whatever the intensity, contracting muscle clears glucose. A post-meal walk remains the most accessible version of the same mechanism, and the food pages cover the fuel side: protein to build muscle and Low-GL carbohydrates to avoid overwhelming the system muscle is trying to stabilize.
